Noting at the Sense Doors (See, Hear, Feel)
Leader: Malin Rozon
Type of Program: Foundations
Prerequisites: None
Fee: $10 per person
Unified Mindfulness (UM) has a flagship technique that combines the momentary concentration power of Burmese-style noting with the simplicity and clarity of monitoring the sense doors. It's called See Hear Feel, and it's a great technique either to introduce you to the whole UM system or to return to regularly to boost your mindfulness skills. This session will begin with an introduction to the See Hear Feel technique, with the majority of the time spent in guided practice. No previous mindfulness or UM experience is required for this 2 hour session - everyone is welcome.

Where attention goes energy flows. When our attention goes to "What’s going wrong" in life, negative energy of painful emotions flow and causes suffering, dissatisfaction, a sense of defeat, distorted thinking and disconnection. Come to the cafe of techniques that will help us take control of our attention by placing it on "What’s Going Right" without denying the wrong. In so doing, we will generate positive energy that is medicine for relieving our suffering, finding fulfilment in life, gaining more insights and mastery and strenghtening our connections. Bring your pen and notepad to jot down insights that you will put in your lunch box to eat later and share with others.

In 1990 at a small conference in India sponsored by the Mind & Life Institute, Loving Kindness author, Sharon Salzberg asked the Dalai Lama a question that completely confused him, “Your Holiness, what do you think about Self-Hatred?” His response, “What’s that?” “How could you think of yourself in that way?” Apart from the evolutionary ‘negativity bias’ that helps us to spot imminent danger, are we aware of the ways in which we feed this bias by ruminating on our missteps as a human being? At this half-day retreat, we will practice a wide array of effective compassion techniques, informed by UM skills, for self and others that fit a broad range of life’s situations, and rewire our thought habits. You can adapt this Compassion toolbox for use in your daily life.
