Restful Jhanas: From Effort to Effortless Awareness

Leader: Colleen Godfrey
Type of Program: Special Offering
Prerequisites: An understanding of Unified Mindfulness’ descriptions of Concentration, Sensory Clarity and Equanimity and the ‘See, Hear, Feel Rest’ technique,
and a concentration practice are helpful.
Fee: $20 per person

Many meditation traditions describe jhanas as deep states of concentration or absorption. In classical Buddhist language, they arise when the mind becomes very stable and unified. As distraction falls away, the system enters states of increasing tranquility and equanimity. But Shinzen Young offers a very interesting reinterpretation of these states. He calls them Restful States. Come to explore his teaching method called Focus on Rest. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Getting Out of the Way: Do Nothing, Practice in Motion and the Wisdom Function

Leader: Kasia Haftek-Lis
Type of Program: Drill/Accelerator
Prerequisites: Familiarity with the ‘See, Hear, Feel’ technique. No previous experience with the ‘Do Nothing’ is needed.
Fee: $20 per person

This program is an experiment in what happens to experience when we stop steering our attention, first in stillness and then in motion. We'll begin with Shinzen Young's ‘Do Nothing’ technique, which has two simple instructions: let whatever happens happen, and whenever you notice an intention to control your attention, drop that intention. From there we'll take the practice onto our feet, noting See, Hear or Feel In while walking, and then carry Do Nothing step by step from sitting to standing, walking and a simple everyday task. Along the way we'll compare what each setting does to effort, clarity and reactivity, and explore what Shinzen calls the wisdom function, the way clearer responses can arise on their own once we have worked through the drive to think. Come curious, and see for yourself what changes.
