Shelly Young

I became interested in meditation practice in 1980 as a result of immense suffering around a debilitating sugar/food addiction, anxiety and depression. Traditional therapy gave me no beneficial effects.  I found my first teacher,  a Zen monk and student of Kennett Roshi, and I became devoted to meditation practice from then on.  I went on to study with various teachers and masters and continue to do so.

In 1981 I met Shinzen in Los Angeles.  We co-directed the Community Meditation Center of Los Angeles for 5 years and co-taught retreats throughout the U.S. and Canada.  Soon after that time, I decided to pursue my lifelong goal of integrating mindfulness and psychotherapy, studying psychology in Boulder, Colorado.

I’m a licensed psychotherapist and addiction counselor presently maintaining a private practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The foundation of the therapeutic approach that I have created is based on Shinzen’s Unified Mindfulness system.  I offer telephone and Skype counseling, specializing in anxiety, panic, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and sugar addiction, but feeling passionate about working with any issue of suffering. The joy of my life is witnessing dramatic results in short periods of time, even with seemingly hopeless conditions.  I offer continuing education seminars to psychotherapists and have presented in over 100 U.S. cities through Cross Country Education and other organizations.

I have immense gratitude for the practice and the gifts it has given me, including great satisfaction in witnessing others’ transformation.  My deepest passion continues to be serving others and deepening my ability to demonstrate the freedom that the practice offers.
